Dr. Marina Soković

Dr. Marina Soković is a Scientific Advisor at the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković” – National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade. She is an internationally recognized expert in natural product research, with a particular focus on the biological activity of metabolites derived from medicinal plants and fungi.

She obtained her BSc (1995), MSc (1998), and PhD (2001) degrees from the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade. Throughout her scientific career, she has developed significant expertise in antimicrobial and antifungal compounds of natural origin, chemical profiling of medicinal plants and fungi, as well as the study of pathogenic fungi affecting plants, animals, humans, and food safety. She completed her postdoctoral training at Wageningen University & Research (The Netherlands).

Dr. Soković is actively involved in doctoral education at the Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, where she teaches courses related to the antifungal activity of plant secondary metabolites. She has supervised numerous undergraduate and doctoral theses, including seven successfully completed PhD dissertations.

She has published more than 450 papers in international scientific journals and over 140 conference contributions. Her work has been cited more than 17,400 times (H-index 63), and according to Stanford University rankings, she is among the top 2% most cited scientists worldwide. She also serves as a guest editor and reviewer for international scientific journals.

In addition to her scientific work, she has extensive experience in science management and science policy. She has held positions in the Scientific Council of IBISS and the Council of the University of Belgrade, as well as the role of Acting Assistant Minister for Science (2019–2025).

Her research is focused on the application of natural bioactive compounds to improve human health, food safety, and environmental protection.
