Biochemistry

Department of Biochemistry accommodates two research groups.

Dr. Ana Djordjevic's group is currently doing research with a common baseline - the problem of obesity and related metabolic disorders. In the last 10 years, our group (then led by Professor Gordana Matić) has dealt with the role of glucocorticoid hormones in neuroendocrine adaptation to stress and in the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome in the animal models of fructose-fed rats and mice and female rats with polycystic ovary syndrome. We are currently developing new animal models to examine the role of the intestinal microbiota in obesity, and we have recently started cooperation with a special hospital for thyroid disease and metabolic diseases "Čigota" on Zlatibor, which is a leading institution for the treatment of obesity in children and adolescents.

You can find more information about us at the following link: https://sites.google.com/view/disobescience/home?authuser=0

Research of Dr. Tomić's group is in the field of newly-synthesized and natural neuro/psychopharmacological substances and the research is focused on molecular mechanisms of their action in animal models and in vitro cell culture. In the field of nutritional biochemistry, the research is focused on role and mechanisms of folate and fatty acid action in the CNS and animal behavior.

Research is conducted on cell lines and animal models using different techniques including biochemical analysis, Western blot, qPCR, proteomics and behavioral testing.

GENERAL TOPICS:

  • The role of intestinal microbiota and inflammation in the development of obesity and metabolic disorders
  • The role of glucocorticoid hormones in neuroendocrine and metabolic adaptation to stress and hypercaloric diet
  • Analysis of pathophysiological changes in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and in animal models of the syndrome
  • Influence of external and genetic factors on the occurrence of neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Investigation of endothelial-protective and anticancer potential of plant extracts rich in polyphenols on cell models

About the Library

The library of the Institute for Biological Research „Siniša Stanković" is a research library focused on the field of biology, including biochemistry, molecular biology, cytology, animal physiology, neurobiology, neurophysiology, immunology, genetics, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem ecology, environmental protection, taxonomy and organic evolution.

The Library was founded in 1947 when the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) established the Institute of Ecology and Biogeography and the Institute of Physiology, Evolution, Genetics and Selection. The following year both institutes founded their own libraries with a mission to collect domestic and international literature necessary for research works. When the two institutes merged and formed the Institute of Biology, the institutes joined their libraries into one integrated library which continued the mission of its predecessors and followed the growth of the new institute. Today, the library holdings include over 30.000 units of periodicals, books and reference works. The library of the Institute for Biological Research „Siniša Stanković" provides free on-line access to numerous international electronic journals through the Serbian Library Consortium for Coordinated Acquisition (KOBSON), as well as to other services. By developing and implementing new information technologies, the library meets essential information needs of the institute's researchers and other users.

The library is registered in the Central Register of Serbian Libraries at the University Library „ Svetozar Marković" (decision number 06-218/195, November 14, 1997; library code 3018407067).

The library is located in the building of the Institute of Biological Research „Siniša Stanković", Bulevar despota Stefana 142. The library has a reading room for 20 researchers, with internet access and the University Information System.

Electronic Services, Journals and Books

KoBSON

The Serbian Library Consortium for Coordinated Acquisition (KoBSON) is a new form of library organization in Serbia. The initiative for establishment of the Consortium came from leading scientific libraries in Serbia 2001. The main goals of the Consortium are optimized procurement of foreign scientific information, transfer from paper to electronic edition, enhancement of electronic information access, and promotion of national scientific publishing. KoBSON portal is available free of charge and without authentication to everybody from the academic IP domain in Serbia. Here is a link to the instructions on how to configure your browser.

Since 2004, remote access ("from home", over commercial Internet provider) is also available to users. For remote access it is necessary to obtain a licence granting adherence to the terms of use. The rights to remote access are granted to everybody permanently employed at academic and scientific institutions founded by the Republic of Serbia, as well as students with scholarships endowed by the Ministry of Science. The licence for remote access is free of charge. Researchers employed at the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković" have to complete and sign the licence and submit it to the Institute's librarian who will forward the request. The account for remote access will be created the same day, the user receives an e-mail containing data for logging in and short instruction on how to use the service.

Scopus

Scopus is a bibliographic database containing abstracts and citations of scientific work published in reviewed journals, books and on conference proceedings. Containing more than 57 million records, Scopus covers more than 21,000 titles from over 5,000 publishers in the field of medicine, chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, technical and social sciences. It is owned by Elsevier and it is available online by subscription. The academic network of Serbia has access to Scopus database through KoBSON. Scopus analyzes an author's output, provides the author with citation overview of the article (since 1996), gives options to exclude self-citation, and counts the author's h-index.

Researchers employed at the Institute for Biological Research "Siniša Stanković" can access Scopus on KoBSON's link where a researcher defines the model of access, from the academic network or remote access.

Web of Science (WoS)

WoS is a scientific citation indexing service maintained by Thomson Reuters, who pioneered citation indexing and analysis. Covering over 50,000 scholar books, 12,000 journals and 160,000 conference proceedings, WoS provides access to multiple databases that reference cross-disciplinary research. It provides a list of the 250 most cited authors from more than 21 scientific fields in the last 20 years of the 20th century.

All databases included in the Web of Science are selective – they cover 10 - 12 % of the existing scientific journals. Its coverage is better in natural and technical sciences.

The academic network of Serbia has access to the following contents of WoS through KoBSON:

three citation indexes – covering the period from 1996,

two sections of conference proceedings – covering the period from 2001,

two sections of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) – covering the period from 2006.

SCIndex

SCIndeks is a bibliographic database, the Serbian citation index, developed to serve as a supplement to the international (Thomson-ISI) citation indexes. SCInedx indexes national journals categorized as periodical scientific publications. All these journals are indexed systematically from "cover to cover". This database provides short descriptions of the journals, article's' abstract and all citation references (metadata). Articles which are published in journals reaching a higher quality and which have accepted the principle of Open Access are represented in full text. SCIndex is available for all internet users free of charge.
