Abstract

According to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CDB), adopted at the United Nations (UN) Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, biodiversity is defined as "variability among living organisms, including the terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems of which they are a part; this includes diversity within species, between species and between ecosystems".

Sustainable development, as a long-term concept, ensures the alignment of environmental protection inter-ests with economic and socio-cultural development. Preserving natural values implies their utilization under conditions and in a manner that ensures the conservation of the values of biodiversity, geodiversity, protected natural goods, and landscapes.

The primary factors disrupting biodiversity are defined by the acronym HIPPO, derived from the initial letters of the words: Habitat alteration (H); Invasive species (I); Pollution (P); Population growth (P); and Overexploi-tation (O). Habitat alteration arises from accelerated agricultural and forestry development, intense urbaniza-tion, industrialization, and tourism in a specific area.

The baseline study of biodiversity in the area of the project “Baseline study of biodiversity in the area of removal of the sunken WWII German fleet in the Danube River” is based on available data on the current state of the environment, data available at the Institute for Biological Research ""Siniša Stanković"", National Institute of the Republic of Serbia, University of Belgrade, published data, as well as field research conducted during 2023.
